Coolest C64 Mod I’ve Ever Seen – The C64 Laptop

February 17, 2011 § 1 Comment

I’ve been surfing around Youtube for a couple of hours looking at old nostalgia stuff from the “golden age” of computing and came across a post that read ‘Commodore C64 Laptop Demo’. This of course grabbed my attention straight away given the fact that I have very fond memories of that classic machine, but a C64 laptop??? Well, turns out to be one of the coolest mods I’ve ever seen. I can only imagine the time and effort this guy put into this project.

The project took just a week and a half with the goal of making it look like a computer from the early eighties just in a modern form factor. It is a fully functional Commodore 64 laptop using actual C64 hardware, one of the last and smallest revisions of the C64C motherboard. It has a Gamecube power supply in it instead of the original power brick.

It uses a device called the 1541-III DTV to emulate a floppy drive using an SD card for storage. The SD card is formatted FAT-32 so you can dump disk images onto it using a PC, and then read it with the C64. This awesome project was put together by Benjamin J. Heckendorn and you can visit his official blog here:

People may break down your door for this Sorry Apple fans, the logo does not glow
